The new generation of prenatal multivitamins

Preconceptional, prenatal and postpartum vitamin supplementation is critical to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Therefore if you are contemplating pregnancy, are pregnant or have just given birth, your health professionals should advise you on the importance of multivitamin supplementation, according your medical history, your specific state of health and your nutritional needs.

In line with its mission to provide safe and effective health products for pregnancy and women who are planning for pregnancy, Duchesnay has introduced a new generation of vitamin-mineral supplements aimed at maximizing their potential protective effect for the baby (e.g.: folic acid to help prevent spina bifida).  Easy to swallow, PregVit folic 5 and PregVit are formulated to minimize the troublesome side effects associated with other multivitamin therapies.

PregVit folic 5 and PregVit were developed according to rigorous standards and evidence-based data in order to reduce the iron-related maternal side effects and to optimize the absorption of essential needed nutrients during pregnancy and breastfeeding, namely iron, calcium and folic acid. To eliminate the negative action that calcium exerts on iron when combined in the same tablet, PregVit folic 5 and PregVit provide iron and calcium into two different tablets to be taken at different times of the day, as recommended in Health Canada’s National Guidelines. It results in optimal iron absorption with a marked reduction in troublesome side effects such as constipation and gastrointestinal disturbances.

PregVit folic 5 and PregVit are provided on prescription only. Preconceptional, prenatal and postpartum vitamin supplementation is critical to pregnancy and breastfeeding; therefore health professionals should advise their childbearing age and pregnant patients on the importance of multivitamin supplementation, according to their medical history, their specific state of health and their nutritional needs.

Both PregVit folic 5 and PregVit contain the same active ingredients. The one difference between the two products is the amount of folic acid found in each preparation. PregVit contains 1.1 mg of folic acid, whereas PregVit folic 5 provides a high dose of folic acid (5 mg).  Based on their patient’s health assessment and stages of preconception, pregnancy or breastfeeding, health professionals may prescribe PregVit folic 5 or PregVit, or both products successively.

Women of childbearing age:

"All women who could become pregnant and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding need a multivitamin containing folic acid every day. Pregnant women need to ensure that their multivitamin also contains iron. A healthcare professional can help you find the multivitamin that's right for you."
