Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy (NVP)

Nausea and vomiting of pregnancy causes some women to have a low tolerance to iron.

PregVit is a prenatal multivitamin for women unable to tolerate the side effects (nausea and/or constipation) of ingesting iron at higher doses than required during pregnancy. PregVit morning tablet contains 35 mg of iron, almost 50% less than other prenatal multivitamins. PregVit separates the calcium from the iron in 2 different tablets taken at 2 different times of the day. Therefore, less iron is needed since there is no interaction between the 2 elements. A recent study at the Motherisk Program, at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, showed that pregnant women taking PregVit absorbed similar amounts of iron versus other prenatal vitamin supplements even though it contains half the amount of iron. In conclusion, the women taking PregVit were able to tolerate PregVit's iron content and have the same quantity absorbed by their body as with other vitamin supplements, while avoiding the well known and frequently troublesome iron-related side effects such as constipation, gastric distress, diarrhea, fatigue and nausea.
